Auditory Experience One:

Destiny is in Your Hands

Single released on 01-10-2021
This song was born out of a powerful realization I had back in 2017 while living with my wife and three boys in a minuscule makeshift underground apartment underneath a small private commercial building in an ugly neighbourhood west of Toronto.

This was a very happy and creative short period of my life where my focus was centred in the present moment. I realized that as long as I kept my mind from overthinking I felt happy and fulfilled.

After some time simmering this song was a prime choice for recording and became the single release that flagged the coming of the full album Confluens.
Lyrics

We can decide to go on
without love
We can pretend to move on
’n’ feel no pain
Just turn and head for the door
with no regrets
And then get on with our lives
to fake our peace

But if we get together
and have no pleasure
What if we open our hearts
but take no risks
We can pretend to go on
like it’s the fate of life
And then believe we’ve moved on
it’s our daily strife

And if we just grow up
without asking questions
We can pull off a smile
to hide our intentions
But when one day all stops...
we feel our hearts
we may uncover the source
of lasting peace

No one can explain
Destiny is in our hands
nothing has been in vain
when we slow down our brain (x2)

Agente pode seguir
sem amor
Agente pode partir
sem ter dor
Agente pode correr
e nem suar
Agente pode viver
sem ter paz

E se agente se unir
mas não gozar
E se agente se abrir
sem se arriscar
Agente pode pensar
tudo é ruim
Agente pode cre
que a vida é assim

E se agente crescer
sem duvidar
Agente pode sorrir
pra não chorar
Mas se um dia a gente sentir…
o coração
talvez aí descobrir
a eterna paz

Sem ter razão
o destino em mãos
nada foi em vão
não é preciso explicar (x2)

This song features award winning trombonist Chris Butcher, an accomplished jazz and world music Canadian/American musician and producer.
Presently residing in New Orleans, Chris enjoyed a great part of his career in Toronto, during the time I was also very active in Toronto’s world music scene.

He was praised for the breathtaking horn band The Heavyweights Brass Band which made its name while under Butcher’s leadership.

Both of us played together for many years in Maninho Costa’s fantastic Samba Ensemble - Batucada Carioca, where we met. (You will be learning more about this on our next piece)

Batucada Carioca circa 2008: Chris Butcher on trombone and Maninho Costa with the microphone.
I’m disappearing in the upper right corner playing a snare drum on my arm...
Destiny is in Your Hands composition has the feeling of a bossa-nova with textures of samba. Textures which were specially harnessed by Maninho Costa’s percussion playing, including the lamenting of his cuíca

As you listen to the track, pay special attention to the cuíca and how it dialogues with the trombone and vocals, and sometimes moans like a wild animal…
The CUÍCA (pronounced “kou-ee-ka”) is a unique drum with a thin bamboo stick attached to the centre of the drum skin on the inside. The surprising sounds are produced by the rubbing of the bamboo with a special fibre cloth (that needs to be moistened).

A precursor of the cuíca called onça (name of the South American Jaguar) is a large tree-trunk drum with a similar set up that native communities built to produce a sound similar to a jaguar’s roar, thereby keeping the threat of these dangerous animals at bay.

Though, wikipedia and other sources on the internet completely ignore this native instrument as a probable origin of the cuica, tracing its origins rather, to other Asian, African and European instruments...
Various versions of the cuíca are used throughout Brazil in many traditional musical ensembles in different forms, shapes and with various names.
A curiosity for the musically inclined...

Another interesting aspect of this composition is its harmonic movement. The verses have a steady G minor chord (G,Bb,D) with one note (the D) moving "up" and "down" in half-steps, like this: D, Eb, E, Eb.

This is very typical of samba and bossanova, but for most, it resembles the 007 James Bond theme song which uses the same harmonic principle.
